What happens during cosmetic dental treatment?

Cosmetic dentistry spans a range of treatments including veneers, crowns, bridges, tooth-coloured fillings, implants and tooth whitening. It can be recommended to address a variety of concerns to improve the appearance of your smile from reshaping to repairing and replacing teeth.

If you have crooked, lost, damaged or discoloured teeth, your dentist will discuss the best course of action with you. You may elect to have one or more treatments depending on your requirements.

Veneers are typically used to address chipped or broken teeth, gaps, natural imperfections, and for hiding deep stains. They work by placing a custom-made porcelain shell over the tooth and fixing it in place over the course of two appointments.

Crowns are also used to address cracked, chipped, or broken teeth, fitted over your natural tooth and fixed in place to restore and protect.

Bridges are a popular solution following tooth loss, helping to preserve the remaining teeth, jaw and gums by placing crowns on the teeth either side of the gap to hold an artificial tooth in place in the middle.

Tooth-coloured fillings are an aesthetically pleasing option when it comes to fixing teeth that have been damaged and 'filled' following tooth decay or an accident.

Dental implants are for anyone who has experienced tooth loss, using a titanium screw to act as the root of an artificial tooth that's then fixed in place to match your natural teeth.

What are veneers?
Veneers are thin slices of porcelain that are carefully made to fit over the front of your tooth. Veneer treatment begins when a small amount of enamel is removed from the front of your tooth, usually the same thickness as the veneer, which will replace it. Your dentist then takes an impression of your tooth and sends it to a dental technician, who custom makes your veneer before it’s attached at a second appointment.
At Knights Dental we offer white fillings. The standard silver-grey colour amalgam fillings have been used for over 150 years and are considered one of the treatment’s strongest and longest lasting materials. However, we understand many people prefer to choose white fillings, and new dental materials make that possible. We can match fillings to the shade of each individual tooth and in most cases, the result is almost invisible.
If a tooth has been badly broken, your dentist may need to add a crown to restore its strength and appearance. If your tooth is broken, you should call us at your local Knights Dental clinic as soon as possible to determine the best course of action.

A crown fits over your original tooth to repair chips and cracks, making it strong and giving it the look and function of a natural tooth once again. Initially, your dentist will prepare your tooth for the crown by shaping it under local anaesthetic and then taking an impression with a rubber-like material. The impression is sent to a lab and your crown is made for you. While waiting, your dentist will protect your tooth with a temporary crown, which is easily removed just before fitting the permanent one, usually two weeks after your first appointment.

Bridges are made by fixing a crown on the teeth either side of the gap left by a lost tooth, so that a false tooth can be held in place in the middle. A bridge can’t be removed at home and is usually made of gold or silver bonded to porcelain. Sometimes other non-precious metals are used in the base to give it extra strength.
