What happens during a hygienist appointment?

Dental hygiene is at the heart of oral health, helping to prevent tooth decay, gum disease and ultimately, tooth loss, as well as preserve the appearance of our teeth. It begins with good daily home care routines, but the support of a skilled hygienist is also fundamental.

At Knights Dental we recommend that you visit our in-house hygienist twice a year to give your teeth and gums a thorough clean and check. This is in addition to your oral health assessments with your regular dentist.

At these appointments your hygienist will check your mouth for any signs of disease before scaling and polishing your teeth to remove plaque, calculus and light stains, especially from hard-to-reach areas that you might miss with your toothbrush.

This will not only make your teeth look and feel their best, but will also support fresh breath and long-term oral wellbeing.

Should I have regular dental hygienist treatments?
Yes, professional cleaning by a hygienist should be combined with home care. A hygienist can thoroughly remove plaque and tartar to help prevent long-term issues including tooth decay, gum disease and ultimately, tooth loss. We recommend visiting your dental hygienist twice a year. However, if you have active gum disease then more regular treatments may be advised.
Helping to prevent gum disease is one of the biggest reasons for visiting your dental hygienist. They do this by gently and painlessly removing hard deposits of tartar (calculus) that build up on the teeth. They also check your mouth for any existing signs of a problem, from gum disease to oral cancer.
A scale and polish treatment is the process that your dental hygienist will use to remove plaque and calculus from the teeth, leaving your mouth feeling clean and fresh.
No, your dental hygiene treatment should not be painful.
