What happens during orthodontic treatment?

Orthodontic treatment improves the appearance of your teeth by addressing crowding, gaps, misalignment and problems with your bite. At Knights Dental we usually use the preferred Invisalign®, almost-invisible approach.

Discreet and effective, it allows for minimum disruption to your daily routine because you can remove the aligners to eat and drink as usual. Following a consultation, your dentist will take a mould of your teeth so that your custom aligners can be made. You will then need to wear these everyday, usually for around six months, until your teeth are in the desired position.

What are the benefits of orthodontic treatment?
The benefits of orthodontic treatment can include:

Improved appearance of your teeth
Straighter teeth
Fixed overcrowding
Repaired bite so your front and back teeth meet evenly when closed
Teeth will be easier to keep clean, meaning you’re at reduced risk of tooth decay and periodontal disease
Less stress on your chewing muscles for improved comfort
Most people have orthodontic treatment in their teenage years, once their adult teeth have come through. However, it is also suitable for adults.
At Knights Dental, we have orthodontic expertise in-house, so you will be able to receive treatment at your local practice. It is important you continue with regular dental check-ups alongside your orthodontic work, in order to maintain your oral health.
There are three main types of braces: removable, fixed, and invisible.

Removable braces are suitable for simple treatment, and can be taken out to be cleaned. This type of brace contains delicate wires and springs, which adjust teeth using gentle pressure. Invisalign® is a brand of removable brace.

Fixed braces are used in lots of cases where teeth need to be guided more precisely than they can with a removable option. A fixed brace has metal or white brackets and bands that are stuck to the teeth temporarily. You will not be able to remove the brace yourself.

Invisible braces are made from tough, clear plastic, so they are almost unseen. Invisalign® is a brand we offer at Knights Dental. Several pairs of slightly differently shaped aligners are created for each patient, and each set is replaced with the next every two weeks. This treatment is only possible for patients with all their adult teeth.
The duration of orthodontic treatment depends on the type of corrections you need. It could take anything from a few months to two and a half years. For most people it takes one to two years.
Some people find that their mouth feels sore for a few days each time the brace is adjusted, but over the counter painkillers should be sufficient to handle this. Your team at Knights Dental will also provide you with wax that you can apply to your brace if needed to soften the edges of the brace, which may touch the inside of your lips or cheeks.
Your teeth need to be held in place by retainers when your treatment is finished. Retainers will make sure your newly straightened teeth don’t move while your surrounding bone and gums settle. Your dentist will discuss the use of fixed or removable retainers with you, depending on your individual needs.
