TEETH WHITENING

What happens during teeth whitening treatment?

An effective way to brighten your smile, teeth whitening is a popular treatment for addressing stains and discolouration. At Knights Dental we offer two options when it comes to teeth whitening, one that takes place in-clinic and one that you can do at home.

In both cases the process is similar. We begin by assessing your overall oral health to make sure you are suitable for the treatment, and we will discuss the different options with you.

We then use a putty-like material to take a mould of your teeth so that we can have a tray custom made, in which the tooth whitening treatment will be applied. You will then be advised on the frequency and duration of use. For the at-home approach, the product usually needs to be applied overnight, everyday for several weeks.

For the in-surgery approach, your dentist will usually use a slightly stronger version of the teeth whitening product, which is applied for around 15 minutes. We then use a light or laser to activate the bleaching agent. The results from the in-surgery treatment are much faster than the home care option, usually requiring just one or two treatments with a recommended annual top up and a take-home kit to help results last.

Will I see a difference in tooth colour?

Whether whitening your teeth at home or in the surgery, your dentist will make a note of your tooth colour before your treatment so you can compare the before and after results.

The effects of whitening usually last up to three years, although this will vary from one individual to the next. If you smoke, or eat and drink a lot of products that can stain your teeth, then the results may not last quite as long.

Whitening your teeth improves the way your teeth look without removing any of your tooth’s natural surface, as would be the case with a crown or veneer.

Most people find there are no side effects from tooth whitening treatment. However, a few report some minor sensitivity to cold during or shortly afterwards. This should be temporary and will disappear within a few days.
