Permanent Tooth Replacement with Dental Implants

At Knights Dental Radyr, we provide long-lasting dental implants to help patients restore their smile, confidence and oral health after tooth loss. Whether you’ve lost a tooth through injury, decay or gum disease, our experienced Radyr dental team offers tailored implant treatment close to home, using modern techniques and high-quality materials.

They work by fusing a titanium screw into the jaw to act as the 'root' for a permanent false tooth. This base is then fitted with an artificial tooth that's made to match your natural teeth.

What happens during dental implant treatment?

It’s important to replace missing teeth not just for appearance, but to protect your remaining teeth, gums and jawbone. Dental implants are a tried and tested solution for replacing missing teeth and restoring full function.

An implant works by placing a small titanium screw into the jawbone. This acts as a secure artificial root for a custom-made replacement tooth, designed to match your natural smile. Treatment usually takes place over two to three appointments, with a healing period of around eight weeks between placing the implant and fitting the final crown. During healing, a temporary tooth can be used so you’re never left with a visible gap.

Everything you need to know about implants

What are the benefits of dental implants?
Implants are a good alternative to removable dentures, providing the appearance and function of natural teeth. They can also be used in cases where existing teeth are not strong enough to support a bridge, or if you have widely spaced teeth. Furthermore, if you need dentures, implants can improve their stability.
Your Knights Dental dentist will do a thorough assessment of your teeth, and talk to you about whether implants are right for you. Most adults with good overall health can receive this treatment. Healthy gums are important, and so is enough jawbone to take the implant. It’s important that following your treatment you’re prepared to visit the dentist regularly to maintain good oral hygiene. You should also try to avoid heavy drinking or smoking which can cause problems with healing.
The treatment time can vary depending on your individual case. Typically, it can take anywhere between six weeks and six months from start to finish.
Before your treatment your dentist will talk to you about your treatment plan and any potential alternatives. They will then equip you with a summary of the different stages, timescales, how many implants you need, and what the expected costs are.
You can receive dental implants to replace one or multiple missing teeth, and they can replace or work with bridges and dentures.
Dental implants are a common treatment, considered safe when administered by a qualified practitioner. As with all surgeries there are some risks involved, but your Knights Dental dentist will do everything to mitigate these and will discuss them with you in advance. If your dentist considers the treatment to be too risky for your individual case, they will recommend an alternative approach.
Dental implant treatment is administered under a local anaesthetic to make sure you are comfortable throughout. You may experience some minor swelling after your implants are fitted, but this will subside within a few days and can usually be managed, if necessary, with over the counter painkillers.
Although standard, local anaesthetic will prevent any pain during surgery, we understand that some people may still be anxious about treatment, and we encourage you to discuss any worries you may have. In some instances we are able to offer additional support, such as conscious sedation.

At Knights Dental in Radyr we are mindful that many people are anxious about dental treatment, especially dental surgeries. We encourage you to discuss any concerns you may have with your dentist, and we can recommend different approaches to help put you at ease. For example:

    Conscious sedation
One approach available is conscious sedation, which will ensure you’re awake and able to react to simple instructions but you will not remember much about the procedure. If you choose to have conscious sedation during your dental implant procedure you will need to arrange for an adult to take you home. You will also be advised not to operate any machinery for at least 24 to 36 hours afterwards. You can discuss conscious sedation with your dentist.

    Music request service
We have state-of-the-art Sonos speakers installed in our clinics, as well as accounts with several streaming services, so we can make sure you’re surrounded by the music that soothes you. Have a chat with us at your local practice in advance of your treatment.

    General anaesthesia
General anaesthesia requires a hospital admission, and is usually – but not always – used for only the most complicated cases. Most patients won’t need a general anaesthetic as conscious sedation is a lot safer and has fewer complications.

Your dentist will discuss follow up care with you to make sure you’re fully informed about looking after your implants.

It’s important that you keep up good oral hygiene habits at home to help them last as long as possible. Most implants can be cleaned using your regular brushing and flossing routine. In some areas of the mouth, interdental toothbrushes and specialist floss might be recommended for optimum health. You should also attend regular oral health assessments and hygienist appointments at your dental practice.

When your implants are newly in place, your dentist may ask you to visit the practice more often than usual. However, when they’re happy that your implants are nicely settled, your ongoing care will be similar to any standard patient.

No, most implants will look exactly like natural teeth.
